Southside Cocktail

The Southside is one of those cocktails that seems effortlessly refreshing, yet carries an air of mystery about its origins. A crisp combination of gin, fresh mint, citrus, and a touch of sweetness, it’s often compared to a gin-based Mojito. But where did it come from, and why does it remain such a staple in the world of classic cocktails? Let’s dive in.

The History of the Southside

The exact origins of the Southside cocktail are debated, but there are two prevailing theories. One traces it back to Chicago’s South Side, where bootleggers during Prohibition supposedly used mint and citrus to mask the harsh flavors of homemade gin. Given that speakeasies and illicit drinking dens were flourishing during the 1920s, it’s easy to imagine a simple yet effective recipe like this taking hold.

Another theory points to the prestigious 21 Club in New York City, where the Southside was a favorite among high society drinkers. Some claim that this refined version of the drink, often served up rather than on the rocks, was the true birthplace of the cocktail we know today.

Regardless of its true origins, the Southside has stood the test of time, remaining a go-to gin cocktail for those who enjoy fresh, citrus-forward drinks.

How to Make a Southside Cocktail

If you love cocktails with a clean and refreshing taste, the Southside is a must-try. Here’s how to make one like a pro:

Ingredients:

  • 50ml (1.75 oz) gin

  • 25ml (0.75 oz) fresh lime juice

  • 15ml (0.5 oz) simple syrup

  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves

  • Ice

  • Mint sprig (for garnish)

Method:

  1. In a shaker, muddle the fresh mint leaves gently with the simple syrup and lime juice. Don’t over-muddle, as you want to release the oils without making the drink bitter.

  2. Add gin and fill the shaker with ice.

  3. Shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds to chill the mixture.

  4. Double strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass to remove any mint bits.

  5. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and serve immediately.

Variations and Tips

  • Southside Fizz: If you prefer a longer, more refreshing drink, top it up with soda water and serve in a highball glass.

  • Choosing Your Gin: A London Dry gin works beautifully, but a softer, citrus-forward gin can add a unique touch.

  • Fresh is Best: Always use fresh lime juice and high-quality mint for the best flavor.
