Some cocktails are sleek and sophisticated. Some are rich with history. And some… well, some just like to show off. Enter the Silver Fizz, the fancy cousin of the classic Gin Fizz—because sometimes, your drink needs to be just as extra as you are.
Fizz, but Make It Fancy
Before we get into the Silver Fizz itself, let’s talk about the Fizz family—a delightful collection of drinks that go all the way back to the 1800s. The earliest known mention of a fizz cocktail appears in Jerry Thomas’s 1876 “Bartender’s Guide”, where the simple mix of gin, citrus, sugar, and soda water was considered a refreshing pick-me-up.
By the early 20th century, the fizz had evolved, with bartenders adding their own flair. Enter the Silver Fizz, which keeps the bones of the classic Gin Fizz but adds egg white for a smooth, creamy texture. Think of it as the gin cocktail equivalent of upgrading from a regular car to a luxury model with heated seats and a sunroof.
A Drink for the High Society (and the Hangover-Stricken)
Back in the day, fizzes were more than just a fun, frothy drink—they were practically medicinal. In the early 1900s, New Orleans bartenders were churning out Gin Fizzes as hangover cures, especially the legendary Ramos Gin Fizz, which took things to the extreme with heavy cream and orange flower water.
The Silver Fizz, however, keeps things simple. It was classy, light, and incredibly refreshing, making it a favorite among those who wanted a touch of indulgence without feeling like they were drinking a full dessert.
By the 1920s, the fizz craze was in full swing, and bartenders were shaking up these frothy beauties in speakeasies across America. Fast forward to today, and the Silver Fizz still holds its own as a go-to cocktail for those who love their gin with a little extra flair.
How to Make a Silver Fizz
If you’ve never made a cocktail with egg white before, don’t panic. It’s easier than it sounds. The trick? A dry shake (shaking without ice) first, then a second shake with ice to get that velvety smooth texture.
Ingredients
🍸 60ml gin🍋 30ml fresh lemon juice🥄 15ml simple syrup🥚 1 egg white💦 Soda water (to top)
Method
Add gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white to a shaker (but no ice yet!).
Dry shake (shake without ice) for about 10-15 seconds to froth up the egg white.
Add ice and shake again until well chilled.
Strain into a highball glass (or any tall glass) without ice.
Top with chilled soda water, which will give it that signature fizz.
Admire your frothy masterpiece, then drink before someone asks for a sip.
